***Namakubi***
The presentation of severed heads, or namakubi, was an important part of post-war process in Japan. The victors would decapitate the bodies of fallen enemies to present before their lords. Lesser enemies’ heads would be piled together, while higher ranking foes would be offered individually, and with great care and presentation. Such an extreme and hard to acquire trophy was a sign of a warrior’s fealty to the lord whom he presented with his foe’s severed head.
